Admissions
Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. A GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework (plus any previously completed graduate or professional work) is required. While a major in nutrition, food science, or a related discipline is preferred, approximately half of our graduate students do not have a bachelor’s degree in Nutrition. If you were not an undergraduate Nutrition or Food Science major, the courses listed below must be completed before applying to our graduate program.
Pre-requisites Requirement
International and domestic applicants not Nutrition Majors for the bachelor’s degree must complete the following courses before their application is considered. Laboratory sections should accompany each course:
- Introductory Nutrition
- Introductory Biology
- Anatomy & Physiology
- Microbiology
- Two semesters of introductory chemistry
- At least one course in organic chemistry
- One course in biochemistry
- NUTR 5300- Food Science (NUTR 2362)*
- NUTR 5300 - Biochemical Nutrition (NUTR 4361)*
- NUTR 5300 - Nutrition in the Life Span (NUTR 4365)*
* Domestic Applicants who were not Nutrition majors as undergraduates can be considered for conditional admissions prior to the completion of the last three courses indicated above with an asterisk (Food Science, Biochemical Nutrition, Nutrition in the Lifespan). If conditionally admitted, you must register for these "leveling courses" in your first semester of graduate coursework. However, students who have completed all courses will be given preference for admission over those who have not.
If you have questions regarding admissions, we encourage you to attend one of our information sessions.
International Student Information:
Due to changes in Visa requirements, international applicants are no longer eligible for conditional admission. If you are an international applicant that is interested in our program, the two nutrition courses listed above, as well as the other courses listed above for non-science majors, may be completed as a non-degree seeking student at Texas State University.
