Frequently Asked Questions
-
How do I register for classes?
The Office of the Registrar has lots of great information ready for you.
-
Can I change my minor?
No, every Fashion Merchandising major is required to minor in either Business Administration or Mass Communication. Students in the Fashion Merchandising Planning and Presentation Concentration designed for students with a career goal as a Buyer or in Allocation and Space Planning are required to minor in Business Administration. This is a longstanding part of our brand and provides clarity for employers. You can add a minor but it may put you over the 120 hours allowed.

Who approves an override into a class?
You can obtain a departmental override by submitting the Registration Override Form.
-
Am I limited to just one internship?
No, you can enroll in internship twice.
-
Does the FM program assign or provide internships for students?
The FM program faculty are advised of internship opportunities on a regular basis, but rather than only offering these opportunities to select students (e.g. assigning them) the opportunity is provided to any interested Fashion Major.
-
Can I receive credit for an internship that I completed when I wasn't enrolled in the internship course?
Internship is not just working a job. It is a course, with assignments and evaluations that are designed to help students learn about and reflect on the work experience. The written assignments in the course cannot be completed retroactively, but in response to current work experience and input, include evaluations from internship supervisors in the workplace. For this reason, it is not possible to receive credit for assignments in the course if a student is not currently in an appropriate internship placement. The instructor of the internship course or the FM Program Internship Coordinator can be contacted for more information about the internship class.

Is there a mimimum technology requirement for students in the fashion program?
There is no specific requirement for the program, since we focus on accessibility to the widest variety of students and are always prepared to help students with limited access to devices. However, if you are planning a computer purchase, there are some things that can be helpful to know. Students taking certain classes like FM2330 or FM3333 are given Adobe Creative Suite licenses during the course to access programs like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop. Many designers do prefer MacBooks and we have seen that a majority of the students use currently them, making group work a bit easier for students who have the same type of device. But we work hard to give agnostic advice and the computers we have in our technology classrooms, where some but not all of the classes that have homework using Adobe might be held, use PCs. Because all the assignments are about learning how to do things, focusing on the process more than producing lots of product, as long as the device is new enough and isn’t a Chromebook, almost any laptop should have sufficient memory and graphic power to be successful in the program. A quick online search on "best devices for Adobe Suite" can also be helpful.
