Proficiency Portfolio Review Information
What is the Proficiency Portfolio Review?
The Proficiency Portfolio Review is a way to evaluate your design ability, your understanding of design philosophy, and knowledge of design concepts and processes based on work from the foundation level courses. Portfolio review assures that students have acquired an understanding of basic and essential design fundamentals and are prepared to move on to more advanced coursework.
Why do students have to go through Proficiency Portfolio Review?
Interior design is a demanding professional discipline. Future professionals need exposure to the process and practice of having their work reviewed and critiqued. Additionally, the Proficiency Portfolio Review process ensures that you will be successful moving forward in the program. The review process also assists the Texas State Interior Design program in maintaining high standards. High standards strengthen the program’s reputation among the practitioner community and elevate the value of your BSFCS in Interior Design degree.
Who is eligible for the Proficiency Portfolio Review?
Your minimum grade must be a “C” in all required ID and ART courses and an overall GPA of at least 2.5. All applications where these criteria have NOT been met will be disqualified from the review process. In addition, you must also have completed or be currently enrolled in the following courses:
- ARTF 1302 Basic Drawing
- ID 1310 Introduction to Interior Design
- ID 1320 Design Graphics I
- ID 2322 Basic Interior Design

How should I prepare?
You are being tested on competencies that you are trained for and have learned/learning in the required classes listed under eligibility.
Note: A town hall type meeting will be scheduled and announced via your CANVAS site (ID 2000) mid semester to provide clarifications and answer questions. Occasionally a workshop might be offered. If a workshop is offered, we will inform you via ID 2000 CANVAS announcement.
When is the Proficiency Portfolio Review?
Proficiency Portfolio Review will take place during the final exam week each semester. Specific review dates and submission deadline will be announced no later than October 1st (Fall semester) and March 1st (Spring semester).

Note: Once you register in ID 2000 you will have access to information in the class Canvas regarding proficiency format and proficiency review skills.
